What Makes a Sofa Italian
The phrase covers two different things. Some Italian workshops carve and upholster by hand, in Brianza or the Marche, with frames in solid walnut, cherry or beech and joints that are glued and pegged rather than stapled. Others are modern factories with a designer on retainer, making seating systems in foam grades chosen for how they recover. Both are Italian and both are legitimate. They produce very different sofas, and the difference shows after five years, not in the showroom.
The Frame Decides How Long It Lasts
Upholstery hides everything, which is why frame quality is where money is quietly saved. A seasoned hardwood frame, corner-blocked and dowelled, stays square. Softwood or engineered panel held with staples loosens, and once the frame moves the cushions never sit right again. Sprung seats in eight-way hand-tied or steel serpentine hold a more even surface than webbing alone. None of this is visible once the piece is covered, so it has to be asked about before the order, not after.
Cushion Fill Is What You Feel Every Evening
Seat comfort comes from the fill, not the shape. High-resilience foam holds its profile and suits a sofa that is sat on daily by the same people. Feather and down wrapped around a foam core feels softer and deeper, and needs plucking back into shape every few days. Mixed fills sit between the two. A sofa that feels perfect in a showroom and flat after two years almost always failed in the cushion.
Leather, Wool, Velvet, Boucle
Full-grain and semi-aniline leather keep the hide's own marks and darken with light; corrected-grain is more uniform and more forgiving with children. Wool and wool blends hold colour and resist pilling better than cotton. Velvet gives depth under lamplight but shows the direction of the pile, so it wants a room where the sofa is not constantly brushed past. Boucle is warm and forgiving on a plain volume and less so on a carved frame. Removable covers are worth asking about on any fabric that will meet daily use.
Proportion Before Style
Seat height, seat depth, arm thickness and back height decide whether a room reads calm or crowded, more than the silhouette does. A deep seat suits someone who sits back with their legs up and punishes anyone who sits upright to talk. Low arms open the room visually; wide arms eat three quarters of a metre before anyone sits down. Measure the wall, the walkway and the door opening before the model is chosen. A sofa that will not turn the stairwell is a problem no finish can fix.
Made to Order, and What That Means
Almost nothing at this level is held in stock. The piece is made after the order, in the frame, size, fill and cover chosen, which is why delivery runs in weeks rather than days and why the finish reference matters more than the product photograph. It also means a model can usually be adjusted: seat depth, arm profile, base height, a different cover on the cushions than on the shell.

How long should an Italian sofa last?
A hardwood-framed sofa with a good fill lasts twenty years or more, and the cover is replaceable long before the frame gives up. The cushions are the first part to tire, usually between five and ten years of daily use, and they can be refilled.
Fabric or leather?
Leather ages into the room and wipes clean, but it is cold on first contact and shows scratches from pets. Fabric is warmer, gives far more colour and texture, and is easier to replace. Where the sofa is used every evening by a family, a removable fabric cover is usually the more practical answer.
What seat depth should I ask for?
Around 55 to 60 cm suits upright sitting and conversation. Above 65 cm the sofa is made for lounging with legs up, and anyone shorter will not reach the backrest without cushions. Ask for the seat depth in centimetres before the model is chosen.
How long does delivery take?
These pieces are made after the order, so eight to twelve weeks is normal for Italy, longer when a cover is out of stock at the mill. Anything promised in days is stock furniture, not made to order.
Can a model be changed?
Usually yes. Width, seat depth, base height, arm profile and a different cover on cushions and shell are common adjustments. Carved frames are the least flexible; modern seating systems the most.
