The Charme living room, a classic scheme in solid wood, is covered here, together with the current pieces that recreate its glamour. In Charme, glamour came from finish and detail rather than size. A gilded Opera sofa, a glass-door New Deco bookcase and a hand-carved Gran Guardia cabinet show the method.

Bookcase or display cabinet: which one?

Choose a bookcase for books and a display cabinet for objects you want lit and seen. The New Deco Bookcase, Sliding Glass Doors by Francesco Pasi comes in cherry, white, grey or sand lacquer, or Luxury, with solid cherry doors and drawers of 34 mm. Sliding doors also save the swing space a hinged door would need in a narrow room.

The Gran Guardia Display Cabinet 2014 by Francesco Pasi is the richer option, with carving made entirely by hand in solid cherry and gold or silver leaf. Both sit well within a wider plan of luxury living room furniture.

Where does the glamour come from?

It comes from gloss and leaf, not from more furniture. The Opera 3-Seater Sofa by Francesco Pasi is offered in 100 Gloss Ebony, Ivory, Taupe or White, with gold leaf or silver leaf details. Set it opposite the display cabinet so the two finishes answer each other.

Keep rugs and curtains plain so the wood and gilding lead. For other frames and widths, look through our italian designer sofas.

How should a glamorous classic room be lit?

Light the cabinet and the sofa separately. A lamp beside the sofa and a soft light on the display shelves bring out leaf and gloss without glare. A single strong ceiling light flattens carving, so keep it dimmed or leave it off.
